From Merriam-Webster Online (

):
Main Entry: vain
Pronunciation: 'vAn
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin vanus empty, vain -- more at WANE
1 : having no real value : IDLE, WORTHLESS
2 : marked by futility or ineffectualness : UNSUCCESSFUL, USELESS <vain efforts to escape>
3 archaic : FOOLISH, SILLY
4 : having or showing undue or excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements : CONCEITED
synonym see FUTILE
- vain·ly adverb
- vain·ness /'vAn-n&s/ noun
- in vain 1 : to no end : without success or result 2 : in an irreverent or blasphemous manner <you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain -- Deut 5:11 (Revised Standard Version)>
synonyms VAIN, NUGATORY, OTIOSE, IDLE, EMPTY, HOLLOW mean being without worth or significance. VAIN implies either absolute or relative absence of value <vain promises>. NUGATORY suggests triviality or insignificance
. OTIOSE suggests that something serves no purpose and is either an encumbrance or a superfluity
. IDLE suggests being incapable of worthwhile use or effect <idle speculations>. EMPTY and HOLLOW suggest a deceiving lack of real substance or soundness or genuineness <an empty attempt at reconciliation>
.
I kept thinking of vain struggles as I was making this piece. Although, the other definitions of the word would seem to apply as well.
The world is just...shit...right now, isn't it? That mine disaster, prime ministers having strokes, people dying in Iraq left and right, that Abramoff guy...
Pat Robertson...
And...I just can't figure what it all means. If it means anything. I wish that I were better with words so that I could reason an answer out of this mess I call a brain, but all I seem to be able to do is ask visual questions.
I hope next week will be a happier one.

I'm thinking maybe it's Ragnarok, or something similar. The end of the world according to the Mayans is coming up pretty quickly.
