The following is a working artist statement and will not be finalized until the conclusion of my Self Portrait series this coming April. I hope that this will provide my watchers with some insight into my reasons for pursuing this project and also my methodology.


All of my work, with the exception of commissions, has been, and will probably continue to be, some form of self portraiture. It has been portraiture by proxy however, and the images always represented some part of me but not my whole self. I have been skirting around this issue for a long time but now I am addressing the subject matter in a more direct way. The idea of "knowing thyself" seems like a worthwhile endeavor, so I will attempt to be more honest about it in the future.

My self portraits are an ongoing meditation in keeping with this newfound resolve. They also serve as a record, a way of keeping track of how and who I was each day. Through my imperfect hand, the portraits will tell a story of how and what I am feeling, who I am, and how I see myself over the course of an entire year.

I started this series, not really knowing where it would take me and I remain unsure of what I will learn through the process. However, at the risk of sounding cliche, the point is not the destination, but the journey.

Deviants of Interest:

1) Now that Deviant Art has made the installation of Journal CSS as simple as clicking a button, I don't have any excuses left. So starting today, I have a pretty new journal, compliments of `thespook.

2) I've officially completed the first month of portraits for my One Self Portrait a Day series. My plan is to switch mediums at the start of each new month. Month 2 will be charcoal/pastel pencils. Just as a reminder, the goals of this project are a) to keep my hand practiced in the art of portraiture and life drawing, since all of the drawings are made with the aid of a mirror and no photos b) to document the passage of time over the course of several months in my life, and c) to document how much a person's face can change from day to day simply according to mood or health. The third goal is two-fold since the images are being captured by myself, as I am prone to human error, and not a machine.

3) I'm a semi-finalist in the Adidas Fingerpainting Contest with my entry, Spirit. Thanks to everyone for your support!

I forgot to mention this with my last portrait submission, but I'll go ahead and do it here. I won't be able to post anything for the next several days since I'll be leaving town to visit family (they don't have an internet connection). I'll still be working on the portraits while I'm gone, but I won't be able to upload any new ones until I get back

I just found out about this site last night and have started collecting my favorite songs. Just in case anyone has forgotten, yes, I am a huge dork. But I'm curious to see what other people's lists would look like, so post them here if you have a mind to do so.
